There is only room for one 99

Manny Ramirez has headed to Los Angeles with the chance to take Manny being Manny to a new level Hollywood, he has the chance to make his former rival, Joe Torre outperform his former team. With all this possibility comes some responsibility as well. The Dodgers brought Manny to win baseballs worst division, and if he doesn't bring home a division title and Jason Bay does in Boston, Sox fans can successfully say, "Manny Who?" for years to come.

My one problem with Manny in LA is his new number. Manny is donning number 99, which is a number only Wayne Gretzky can wear. The great ones number is retired across the NHL but I believe it should also be retired universally across sports, Gretzky is the only athlete who is universally known as the best of all time in his sport. In football there is too much debate and too many positions, baseball much of the same. In basketball Jordan comes close to Gretzky status but there are still those who argue against Jordan's claim as the best of all time. Number 99 should be reserved for one and only one athlete, the Great One, Wayne Gretzky. Not a Manny being Manny.
